"Israel was not created in order to disappear---Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy and it honors the sword of freedom."...John F. Kennedy
- Perspective: During WWII, the Nazis murdered over 6 million Jews.
- Perspective: Since the beginning of this year alone, 500 rockets have rained on Israel targeting Israeli civilians. In the last decade, thousands of rockets have fallen on Israel.
- Perspective: Prior to the Six Day War in 1967 between Israel and Arab States (Egypt, Jordan and Syria), Israel's borders were repeatedly attacked by Arab terrorists and the Syrian military. The outcome? Israel kicked their asses during the Six Day War.
- Perspective: Israel---about the size of New Jersey--- remains surrounded by over 300 million people who want to wipe her off the world map.
Get the picture? And now---with the threat of world-wide Islamist terrorism---it's more important than ever to continue our support of Israel. Without getting into the historical and archaeological evidence and right of Israel to exist, the practical reasons are just as important. They include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Israel remains the only democracy in the Middle East.
- Israel has been a staunch ally of the United States especially in sharing intelligence in the war on terror and providing us with important information in counter-terrorism. In fact, Israel was an important strategic partner during the Cold War providing protection and intelligence against Soviet intrusion into the Middle East.
- Israel is also a strategic ally including assisting us in countering unconventional weapons including cyber threats.
- Israel and the United States work together well in developing sophisticated military technology such as missile defense systems, cyber weapons, drones and a wide array of electronic warfare systems.
- Israel provides a safe harbor for our Navy's 6th fleet, an important base for emergency and rapid deployment in that part of the world.
This is not meant to mitigate some of the differences both countries have on occasion. But the fact remains, both countries share similar interests. And the current threats of world-wide Jihad makes this relationship that more important.
